Minimum Credit Score for a Credit Card in UAE — By Card Type

📅 21 July 20265 min read

Do UAE Banks Publish a Minimum Credit Score?

No — UAE banks do not publicly advertise the exact AECB score required for each product. Approval decisions are made using a combination of your credit score, income, employer, existing obligations, and banking relationship. However, based on approval patterns and industry norms, clear thresholds emerge for each type of credit card.

Minimum AECB Score by Credit Card Type

Standard Unsecured Credit Card — Score 650+

Most mainstream banks in the UAE will consider applicants with an AECB score of 650 or above for a standard unsecured credit card. At this level, you are in the "Good" range and represent an acceptable credit risk to lenders. Banks such as Emirates NBD, ADCB, FAB, Mashreq, and ENBD typically require this threshold, alongside a minimum monthly salary (usually AED 5,000–8,000 depending on the bank).

If your score is between 650 and 699, you may be approved but with a lower credit limit and fewer benefits than someone in the 750+ range.

Premium / Rewards Credit Card — Score 720+

Cashback cards, travel cards, and premium products with airport lounge access and high reward rates generally require a score of 720 or above. Banks want borrowers who are likely to pay in full and maintain good standing over time. At this level, you are solidly in the "Good" range approaching "Excellent."

Premium / Platinum / Signature Card — Score 750+

High-limit cards, Visa Signature, Mastercard World Elite, and similar premium products typically require a score of 750 or above — the "Excellent" range. These products also usually carry higher income requirements (AED 15,000–25,000 per month or above).

Secured Credit Card — Score Not Required

A secured credit card has no minimum AECB score requirement because your cash deposit acts as collateral. This makes it the most accessible product for anyone with a low score, no score, or a damaged credit history. Banks that offer secured cards in UAE include Mashreq (from AED 3,000 deposit), CBD, ADIB, and Emirates Islamic.

Secured cards report to AECB monthly — meaning using one correctly builds your score toward the thresholds for unsecured products.

What If Your Score Is Below the Threshold?

Option 1 — Apply for a Secured Card First

If your score is below 650, a secured card is the clearest path. Use it for small purchases, pay in full every month, and within 12–18 months your score will typically improve enough to qualify for standard unsecured products. Many banks will upgrade you automatically and return your deposit.

Option 2 — Apply via Your Salary Transfer Bank

If your salary is credited to an account with a specific bank, that bank has visibility into your income and may approve a credit card with a lower score than the standard threshold — particularly if you have been a customer for 12+ months with no issues. This relationship-based underwriting can work in your favour even if your AECB score is borderline.

Option 3 — Improve Your Score First

If you are at 580–640, the fastest legitimate route to a standard unsecured card is improving your score by 50–70 points. The most effective actions: pay down existing card balances to below 30% utilisation, ensure all payments are on time for the next six months, and dispute any errors on your report. This can move your score into approval territory within 3–6 months.

Option 4 — Add a Co-Applicant

Some UAE banks allow a co-applicant (typically a spouse) on a credit card application. If the co-applicant has a stronger AECB score, this can improve your approval chances. Not all banks offer this, and the co-applicant shares liability for the account.
